Remember how puzzled I was by the “botched cross-under” in f177 row 1 left, perhaps in 2023.
I had not yet realized, or recognized, the theme/ motif/ technique: {visually cut branch by crossing behind another branch}
Huge misleading thing I just noticed about image paths: The date that’s shown in the image path is not the date of uploading the image to the gallery directory (December 2024); rather, it’s the date on which the present webpage was created (June 2023).
{YI hand} & {mushroom building topper} are examples of: when you gather all variants / instances of a motif, the most detailed and explicit instance enables strong interp & id’n of the most hazy & weak, non-detailed instance. It’s mandatory to work across the images, tracing a given motif.

Analyzing any Motif in an Eadwine Image Requires Efficient Gallery of All Eadwine Images
To provide a sure reading of {mushrooms}, {branching}, {handedness}, and {stability} motifs in images f134, f145, and f177, it’s necessary to analyze all of the Eadwine images in Great Canterbury Psalter.
{balance scale} Motif
For example, there are 7 instances of {balance scale}.
There are many instances of building, tower, entryway, altar, throne/seat.
Wishy-Washy Use of {handedness} Demands Flexibility and Rationalization
{handedness} orientation is used in highly variable ways, ranging from inconsistent, confusing, systematic (f134), symmetrical, exceptions, and poorly communicated.
Some motifs are exasperating and annoying, a confusing and unhelpful implementation that’s not satisfying.
Between lack of the motif, inversion of the motif, and standard use of the motif — within a given image — I want to yell at Eadwine, “make up your mind, be clear, be consistent” — ranging from sloppy inconsistency, to clever variants, the result is more a raging MESS than masterful.
These images are psilocybin experience puzzles. Some of Eadwine’s puzzles are poorly implemented and are more annoying than impressive.
An unwise number of variants and degrees of variant, Eadwine too often buries the signal in his noise, degenerating to failure to communicate.
If you learn the rules, in a flexible way, and the rules still can’t be applied to many of the images because Eadwine didn’t follow his own rules, it’s a mess.
There’s lots of signal — and tons of noise, that’s inelegant. Eadwine constantly is making up motif patterns and variants and experimenting with options inconsistently, as he goes along.
Image f134 is probably later than others, after Eadwine figured out advanced patterns and used them highly consistently. Be consistent and comprehensible.

Amanita is not that, it’s superficial Anthropology, 1880 theory of Sociology.
‘entheogens’ means Psychedelics replaced by ordinary-state-based Anthropology theorizing about “entheogens” which replaces psychedelics, in a standard 3-step move: equate, then substitute , then shut out the thing (psilocybin) and omit and delete psychedelics.

Amanita-focused “Ethnobotany” is a fraud, a ploy, one of the approaches that are not what they claim to be: that approach pretends to be about ingesting visionary chemicals, but its actual purpose is to deliver neutered OSC-based academic theory-construction instead.

Most entheogen scholars treat the topic of suppression in pre-modernity as if the suppressors themselves were sober and wanted to suppress the altered state entirely.
I think that this attitude transposes the rhetoric of modern Prohibition and War on Drugs into a pre-modern context.

The attitude shapes research, by shaping the sorts of questions the researcher allows themselves to ask.
Many researchers automatically assume that some authority (usually the Roman Empire or the Catholic Church) was opposed to the altered state entirely and sought to suppress psychedelics.

The researchers who think this way treat their research as telling a story about suppression. Their story becomes one-sided.
They do not think to look for evidence in the mainstream Roman Empire society or the mainstream Middle Ages or the mainstream Renaissance.
Any evidence they find in those contexts automatically becomes a sign of an oppressed group or a fringe survival or a secretive elite.

As a matter of research assumptions I do not assume that there was suppression of drugs.
I am interested in looking for evidence more broadly than most researchers.

I find that many entheogen scholars are committed to demonizing the mainstream of past societies.
I think that they have internalized the rhetoric of modern Prohibition, War on Drugs, and the counter-culture, and project that idea onto the past, consciously or unconsciously.
Because the entheogen scholars understand drugs to be counter-cultural today, they think that they were counter-cultural in the past.

I’m not interested in trying to find a drug counter-culture that just so happens to mirror 20th century counter-culture.
Many entheogen scholars seems to be interested in finding a drug counter-culture in pre-modernity.
